Just freezing spending without even cutting anything would mean that in 4 years or so the budget would be balanced. Then, simply holding it another 2 years and only allowing it to rise at the rate of inflation would begin paying down the national debt and at least give us some cushion if we need the money in the future. To be clear, just continuing a $6t budget for the next 10 years would put us to where we had a surplus. This has always been the truth of the deficit. That is how terrible our government has been run. It is a very simple fix. Simply pass a constitutional amendment which says that the budget cannot be raised for 5 years and then only at the rate of inflation without a super majority of Congress - which is near impossible to get. Republicans would probably support this bill but I doubt Democrats would. A couple might.
